Harvard alumni are everywhere in Asia,
building, teaching, leading and making a difference.

  Dear Colleagues in AHUACA,
I am writing to give you a brief update on the state of our annual conference. Please mark the dates in your calendar. As previously advised, the third annual gathering of the Association of Harvard University Alumni Clubs of Asia (AHUACA) is being hosted in Manila, the Philippines, where Asia wears a smile, from November 19 to 21, 2004.

A challenging and exciting program is being developed including an all star cast of international speakers, dinner with the President of the Philippines (hopefully), a grand reception and fellowship night featuring a truly superb cultural show, ballroom dancing with live bands, home dinner program with local hosts, pre and post conference tours and special programs for accompanying persons including yoga, interior decoration and cooking, making this a truly memorable occasion.

  1. Dates. Considering constraints like hotel availability, Ramadan, holidays, possibly conflicting events and the amount of time needed to plan our conference, dates have been set for Friday November 19 to Sunday, November 21, 2004.

  2. Hotel. We have selected the best that we have both in terms of facilities and location. This is the Shangri-La Hotel in the center of Makati.

  3. Basic approach. A little shift from previous AHUACA conferences, which were primarily learning conferences, we are planning that the 2004 conference will also have a bit more of fun, socializing and networking but without sacrificing the learning aspects. There should be raffles, fellowship activities, cultural shows, and lots of spouse / accompanying person programs. What do you think?

We would like to make this annual assembly of Harvard alumni in Asia - The Manila Conference ?one that will seek to strengthen the camaraderie among Harvard alumni as we discuss our role in the large-scale social and economic issues facing Asia, and explore the expanding relationship between East and West. AHUACA 2004 will bring us all together to re-connect, re-establish our ties as we reflect on the future of Asia.

I am enthused and feel that we can have a memorable conference and get-together. The key success ingredient will be your presence and that of your members. We would be grateful for your help to make the conference a stunning success.

  4. Theme, Topics and Speakers: We would be grateful if you could suggest topics for discussion and speakers, and would appreciate if you identify speakers which you have facility for inviting. Because of financial constraints, we probably can at best provide transportation and accommodation but not any fees.

  5. Membership lists: Finally, may I reiterate that you send the full list of members and their contact details to me at your earliest convenience?

We will be in touch regularly, sometimes directly and sometimes through our secretariat. Either way, I hope to keep you posted.

    Sincerely,

Estelito P. Mendoza
